Project details

Hertford Theatre opened in the late 1970s and is owned and managed by the East Herts District Council. The theatre is now undergoing a £24 million “Growth and Legacy Development” which will transform the theatre into a thriving hub for arts and culture.

The centre is set to include 3 bespoke, 1st release cinema screens, and increased seating capacity in the main auditorium by over 30% from its current capacity. Hertford Theatre will also include the introduction of a new dress circle level, new community spaces, a public plaza-style foyer & riverside café and also a 1st-floor bar. Improved access to all areas of the building will also be developed so that artists can better reach the stage, backstage and dressing rooms.

Scope of works

Decontaminate undertook the enabling works package which included scaffold installation, management of M&E isolations, plant removal and asbestos removal throughout the theatre, with all works completed under fully and suitably controlled conditions.

Additional asbestos-containing materials were also found during the ‘enabling investigative’ works and subsequently remediated the building of this asbestos, mitigating and ensuring that the demolition contractor and the client didn’t suffer any associated and unnecessary delay costs and program implications.
